Sharing:  This week the Eeyores will share.

Kindergarten Round Up is this Thursday at 12:30 in Room 1.  This meeting is for prospective kindergarten parents (adults only).  If you know anyone who is interested in having their child attend TK or K next year at TECS, please let them know!

Reminder:  February Book Charts were due last week!

The big week is here!  We are going to "write" (dictate) our fairy tales!  I will type them for the children and put them in their hardbound books.  Then the children will spend the next couple of weeks illustrating their books.  When completed, they will read their books to each other (some with help) and enjoy the stories they created.  All stories will have the elements of characters, plot, setting, problem, resolution, a dedication page and an about the author page.  I know the children will be very proud of their books!

Picture
This week we will meet Ms. V who loves vegetables!  We will work in our rhyming books, Benchmark reading books, and Alphabet Journals.  We will continue reading Dr. Seuss books and have a couple of activities related to Dr. Seuss. In math we will continue working in our math journals, playing math games and exploring shapes and patterns.

A big thank you to Katie, who has volunteered to create a lovely piece of art with our students for the Silent Auction!  She will come in on Tuesday morning to get started.

Another big thank you to Jamie and Dana who will be helping our students with gardening this week!  It is finally Spring!  I know the children will enjoy planting and growing their own vegetables and what a perfect week to start as we meet Ms. V.

Our Schedule This Week:
Monday:  Big Buddies
Tuesday:  Katie-Art, Planet Bravo
Wednesday:  Let's Find Out! magazine, yoga, Council, P.E.
Thursday:  Gardening, Second Step, Kindergarten Round Up (adult meeting)
Friday:  Morning Assembly, Music, Art, Science, P.E.

Thank you all for your support of Room K!

Early dismissal all week!  (1:35)

Sharing:  This week the Winnie the Poohs will share.  We have a new sharing topic so please check to be sure your child brings the correct item.  All information is on this site.

Kindergarten Round Up is March 12 at 12:30 in Room 1. If you know anyone with a student interested in TECS or someone who is going to attend, please have them attend this adults only meeting.
This week we will be having parent conference and you will receive your child's report card and test data.  This is important information as TK and K are the foundation for your child's future school success.  Please take the time to be sure that your child:

-turns in their monthly book log ( I only received 3 book logs on Friday)
-brings the correct share for our monthly sharing topic.  Children share by group (check the calendar on this site)
-practices reading on Lexia 10 minutes per day (minimum)
-reads (is read to) at home everyday
-practices proper printing when completing homework

Manners Matter:
During our Friday morning assembly our principal, Mr. K, mentioned the difficulties we are having with some students.  There are some students who do not follow the school and District rules (Be Safe, Be Respectful, Be Responsible).  There are some students that do not complete their classwork, refuse to do work assigned, do not complete projects.  This is a school-wide dilema and many schools are facing similar difficulties.  It is important to establish a school culture that is respectful and that students are held accountable for maintaining high standards.  Additionally, please remember to be respectful during assembly:  sit in our class line, pay attention to the speaker, avoid side-conversations.  DO NOT enter the classroom or wait by the classroom.

I am happy to say that I see very little of this in Room K.  Our students are, for the most part, respectful and hard working.  They are generally kind to each other and helpful.  This is in large part due to the high expectations we maintain and the wonderful support we get from the parents in Room K.  This is very much appreciated!  Please continue this good work as your children matriculate through the grades and encourage other children you know to do so.  It takes a village to raise responsible citizens!

This week we will meet Ms U.  She is a letter light letter (vowel) and we will learn/review both sounds.  We will continue working in our language arts books.

Exciting news!  We are going to begin our fairy tale writing by exploring with fairy tale story cards.  The children will have the opportunity to create their own stories together using the cards as prompts.  This is in preparation for our Fairy Tale books.

Dr. Seuss:  Monday is Dr. Seuss' birthday and Read Across America Day.  We will be doing a lot of reading and activities related to Dr. Seuss books..  We love guest readers, so if you would like come in to read a story, please let me know!

Our Schedule:
Monday:  Dr. Seuss' Birthday, Big Buddies
Tuesday:  Planet Bravo
Wednesday:  Let's Find Out! magazine
Thursday:  Second Step, Library
Friday:  Morning Assembly, Music, Homework Review, Sharing, Science Hike

Please remember:  Early dismissal all week!

Sharing:  This week the Piglets will share.

Reminder:  Please make every attempt to arrive to school on time!  Even better, arrive a little early!  Late arrivals disrupt the classroom routine and the student will miss out on instructional minutes.  We want to stress the importance of timely attendance.  All students' records reflect attendance, including tardies.  Let your child know that you value their education by arriving to school on time.  Remember, your child has no control over their arrival, we depend on you!

This week we will meet Ms. T who has really tall teeth and loves to brush her teeth!  We will practice our "perfect printing" and we will continue working in our creative writing story books.  We are gearing up for our biggest writing project of the year:  writing our own fairy tales!  Please help your child practice their printing at home and continue reading every night to help expand your child's vocabulary.  Remember:  Monthly Book charts are due this Friday!

We are so excited to have baby chicks in Room K!  The children were luck enough to witness a few of the chicks hatching and it was so excited!  We will keep them in the classroom this week and then they will be returned to the family that kindly gave us the eggs to hatch.  It has been a wonderful learning experience and the children are so sweet sitting at the library table "reading" to the baby chicks.

This week we will be working in our math journals and reinforcing math concepts with math games.  We also will use reading games this week to reinforce letter sounds and sight words.

We love music class!  Have your children been singing new songs?  We have a wonderful music teacher who is teaching us new songs each week and the children really enjoy it!

I am continuing to assess the children in preparation for report cards this week.  I look forward to sharing the information with you during parent conferences next week.

Our Schedule This Week:

Monday:  Big Buddies
Tuesday:  Planet Bravo
Wednesday:  Let's Find Out Magazine, Yoga, Council, P.E.
Thursday:  Second Step, Library
Friday:  Morning Assembly, Music, Art, Science, Homework Review, Sharing, P.E.

Thank you for all of your help in the classroom and for your support of your child's school success!

This week is so special because we finally arrive at the 100th day of school!  The children have been so excited counting to 100 and to celebrate we will spend Math time counting, building with manipulatives and writing numbers to 100.  We will share our collections of 100 objects (DON'T FORGET TO BRING IN YOUR BAG OF 100 OBJECTS!)  We will also read stories about the 100th day of school.  It is a big milestone in Room K!

I am so proud of our Room K students for working hard to learn and practice the Spell Check words!  It was their first  "test" and they all tried really hard to remember the words and to print neatly so the adults scoring the tests would be able to read their writing.  They are beginning to realize the importance of printing neatly!

This week we will meet Letter Person R.  We have been working on r-controlled vowels (er, or, ar) and we will continue to practice our letters, sounds and reading skills, differentiating instruction according to each child's abilities and learning styles.  As we complete our second trimester, we have the expectation that all children should know the letters taught so far, and their sounds.  Many of the children know more and quite a few are already sounding out words and reading.

A big thank you to Katie for the amazing artwork she helped the Room K children create for the Art Gallery!  It was spectacular!  I am sure you will all be thrilled to have these lovely creations hanging in your homes.

Be sure to collect your pledges for the Spell Check

This week we will meet Mr. Q, who loves to ask questions.  This might remind you of your child!  Children are curious and want to know about the world and their questions seem endless, but they are so great!  We are learning to read sentences with question marks, and to raise our voice at the end of reading questions.  We will be working in our Benchmark books, rhyming books, journals and alphabet dictionary.

We have added "writer's workshop" in the mornings.  Using our new bright books, the children are writing short stories (about one sentence!) each morning and illustrating it. The children are very excited about writing and sharing their stories. This is the beginning of our story writing program.  We will be writing our own fairy tales soon!

We are continuing to learn about penguins, winter and snow and this Friday is our science hike!  We are also working in our February math journals.

Our Schedule this Week:
Monday:  Big Buddies
Tuesday:  Planet Bravo
Wednesday:  Yoga, Council, P.E.
Thursday:  Library
Friday:  Morning Assembly, Music, Spell Check, Homework Review, Sharing, Science Hike, P.E.

Thank you all for your help and support in Room K!

Sharing-This week the Tiggers will share.

Progress Reports will be sent home this week as required by LAUSD.  We will have conferences in March to further discuss your child's progress.  Please be aware of the impact absences and tardies have on your child's ability to keep up with class lessons.  Also, important factors that can accelerate your child's progress are reading nightly with/to your child. and completing a few minuets of Lexia daily.
Picture
This week we will meet Ms. P who has pointy patches.  We will be working on the letter and sound of the letter /p/ as well as completing our usual language arts curriculum.  We are also having a special mini-unit about penguins this week including comparing types of penguins, graphing, penguin math activities, and a direct draw penguin activity.  We will be making shape snow people with our Big Buddies and have lots of fun enrichment this week.

Sharing:  This week the Winnie the Poohs and Piglets will share.  Note that we have a new sharing topic.  It can be found on this site under the "more" tab.  Please make sure you know when your child's share day is and help him/her prepare a proper share presentation.  Children love to share and are very proud when they are prepared!

It is always so fun to see how much the children have grown and matured over the break.  Now they will be much more able to grasp concepts such as beginning reading and writing.  We will begin reading many, many folktales and fairy tales in preparation for an upcoming unit on fairy tales.  We will eventually write and illustrate our own fairy tales!

This week we will meet Mr. N who has a noisy nose.  The children will practice writing the letter /N/, learn the sound of the letter and discover words that begin with the letter.  We will continue to work in our Letter People book, rhyming book, alphabet dictionary, journal and Handwriting Without Tears.  We will continue with Lexia (big shout out to those who worked on Lexia during our 3 week break)Planet Bravo games  and Starfall.

Snowflakes!  We will begin a special seasonal unit on snowflakes which includes a lot of cutting practice, recognizing the initials of our name, matching upper and lower case letters and a special Big Buddy activity focusing on how we are all unique, just like snowflakes.

We will begin our January math journals, and use games and manipulatives to reinforce math concepts such as number bonds.  You might remember these as "fact families."  We are continuing to work on number recognition up to 30 and eventually to 100.

Our Schedule this Week:
Monday:  Big Buddies
Tuesday:  Planet Bravo
Wednesday:  Let's Find Out! magazine, Yoga, Council, P.E.
Thursday:  Second Step, library

This week we will meet Mr. M with his munchy mouth!  We are officially half-way through the Letter People and though most of the children know all of the letters in the alphabet now, by focusing on one letter each week, we can work on the letter sound and formation, reinforcing fine motor skills, listening skills and learn to read some words too.

This week will be filled with fun, holiday songs, Room K crafts and festivities.  We are looking forward to our dress rehearsal on Thursday where we will have the opportunity to see all of the children perform including siblings and our Big Buddies!  We are finishing our Benchmark Unit 3 books and our Food Unit.  We will be having Food Unit homework this week.  Please complete it each night and return it the next day so we can discuss it in class.  Hopefully your children are now more interested in eating healthy food and are helping prepare their own lunches and even helping prepare meals at home.

Our Schedule This Week:
Monday:  Big Buddies
Tuesday:  PLanet Bravo
Wednesday:  Singing Practice, Yoga, Council, P.E.
Thursday:  Holiday Program Dress Rehearsal, Class Party
Friday: Holiday Program 8:30, 10:30, Minimum Day Dismissal

Happy Winter Break!
