This week we will have Parent Conferences and an early dismissal all week.  I am looking forward to discussing your child's progress with you!

Sharing:  This week we are beginning a new share topic, small things.  Please look at the assignment on this classs website for details.  This week the Piglets will share.

Meet Ms. T who loves to brush her tall teeth!  Teeth have become quite the topic of discussion in Room K as the children are beginning to loose their baby teeth and their adult teeth are emerging.  It is always exciting when one of the Room K students gets a "wiggley" tooth or looses a tooth.
We will practice words beginning with the sound of /T/ and practice writing the letter /T/. The children are making excellent progress printing and writing words!  We are excited to expand our sight word vocabulary and I told the children if they wrote words at home, they could bring them in to share with us.  I encourage the children to write words on sticky-notes and "label" their environment.  We will be doing this in class too..  The children are also making great progress on the Lexia website and are very motivated.  As they move to higher levels, they might need more support at home.  Please monitor their progress as they work at home to be sure they are comprehending the directions.  As you know, this is optional.
We are now working on Benchmark Unit 7, focusin on transportation.  We are practicing letters, sight words too.

Upcoming: We are busy preparing for Read Across America Day, which is on March 2nd, so we will celebrate for the month of March in honor of Dr. Seuss' birthday (March 2nd).  We will have many opportunities for guest readers during March and I will post a sign up for those of you interested in being a guest reader.

Our Schedule:
Monday:  Big Buddies
Tuesday:  Speech & Language, Music
Wednesday:  Let's Find Out! magazine
Thursday: Art Trek, Library
Friday:  Morning Assembly, Vocabulary Parade, Sharing, Homework, Science

Thank you for all of your help in the classroom and preparing materials and contributing to Room K. Your support is always appreciated!
Mrs. W.

This week we will meet Ms. S who is a super hero in her super sock!  An easy way to to help your child remember how to make /s/ in the correct direction is to make a /c/ then a backwards /c/!

We will continue our language arts activities.  We are beginning to transition the children from dictating and tracing their stories, to writing on their own.  Sometimes we have them copy the words and some children are ready to write their own stories using both invented and conventional spelling.
We are beginning our new Benchmark unit:  Transportation. We will continue reading related books, learning sight words and working in our Benchmark workbooks.
I have finished all of the assessments in preparation for report cards and I am so pleased with the progress the children have made this trimester!  I can really see the effects of the children's hard work both in classwork and on Lexia.  Thank you all for your support and diligence working with your children.  Collaborating together sends a positive message to them!

We will have another Science Hike this Friday.  We welcome parent volunteers to join us!

Our Schedule:
Monday:  Presidents' Day
Tuesday:  Speech & Language, Music
Wednesday:  Let's Find Out! magazine, yoga, Council, P.E.
Thursday: Second Step, Library
Friday: Morning Assembly, Homework Review, Sharing, Science Hike, P.E.

Thank you to our amazing volunteers who help us in the classroom, contribute to class activities and support our students as they learn and grow,
Mrs. W.

The 100th Day!

Speech & Language:  This week we will practice the initial blend of /sp/.  We will have a fun craft of creating spin art!

Sharing:  This week the Winnie-the-Poohs will share.

Friday is a shortened day with a 1:35 dismissal.
This is a very busy and exciting week.  We will celebrate both the 100th day of school and Valentine's Day.  We will also have a District mandated lockdown drill on Monday.  In Room K we will have the very simple explanation that we are practicing staying in our classroom in case there is a situation outside that is not safe.  In fact, last year we had a short, but real lockdown when a bobcat was spotted across the street from the school.  We wanted to be sure that the situation was safe for students.  This year, we will practice staying together in a safe place in our classroom.  In Room K, we will sit together in the corner of the classroom behind my desk.  Mr. Gediman will be conducting the drill.

This week we will meet letter R, who has rainbow hair.  We will practice writing the letter and words that begin with the target sound.  We will work in our rhyming books, journals, listening center, Alphabet Dictionary, Handwriting Without Tears, Lexia and Starfall.  I have finished most of the mid-term assessments and will share them with you during parent conferences.  If you are unable to make it for a conference, I will send the assessments home with your child's report card.

We are working on our February math journals and we are continuing to practice writing numbers.  We have been practicing writing numbers to 100 for the 100th day of school.
We will enjoy Valentine's Day activities in preparation for Thursday.  If your child is bringing Valentines, please bring 20.  Do not write any names on the front as it makes it much easier for the children to "deliver" their valentines.

Our Schedule:
Monday:  Lockdown Drill (10:30), Big Buddies
Tuesday:  100th Day of School!, Speech & Language, 100th Day Celebration (10:30-friendship fruit salad), Music
Wednesday: Valentines art activities, Let's Find Out! Magazine, Yoga, Council, P.E.
Thursday: Valentine's Day!,(Celebration at 10:30.) Library
Friday:  Morning Assembly, Sharing, Art Trek, Kid's Heart Challenge (12:35 on the Upper Yard)

Thank you for all of your help and support in Room K and for contributing and preparing class materials.

Best wishes,
Mrs. W

Speech & Language:  This week we will practice the sound of final /F/.  We will make leaf rubbings and our snack of a Loaf of Cinnamon Bread will be contributed by Sophia Bella.

Sharing-We have a new sharing topic for February, stuffed animals.  This week the Eeyores will share.
Picture
This week we will meet Mr. Q who loves to ask questions.  I am sure this sounds familiar as 5 year-olds also love to ask questions!  It is so important to acknowledge their questions and do our best to answer them or better yet, to help them figure out the answers.  We will also be talking about the difference between a statement and a question.  We will also be talking about punctuation marks, especially question marks.

This week we will work in our rhyming book, writing journal, practice reading skills playing games, our Alphabet Dictionary book, our Handwriting Without tears book, Letter People pages, and use the Lexia and Starfall program on the computer. We are on Unit 6 of our Benchmark reading program-Animals.  We are reading stories and working in our workbook to reinforce printing, math skills, learn sight words and practice fine motor skills by coloring in objects large and small.  We are working in our February math journal on Common Core math skills and playing math games to have some fun with numbers, sorting and classifying.

I am continuing to individually assess each child in preparation for upcoming report cards.  Optional parent-teacher conferences are the last week of February and I will be creating a sign up for those.

Thank you to those of you who have signed up to help with our 100th day of school celebration and Valentine's Day celebration!  It is great to find a positive way to be involved in your child's classroom by either coming in to help or sending in needed items.  Children love to know their parents are involved in their classroom.

Beginning this Wednesday, we will have a Pepperdine University student, Ms. Steele, observing and helping in our classroom once a week.  The children enjoyed having Ms. Lee, last semester and I am sure they will benefit from this experience again.

Our Schedule this Week:
Monday:  Big Buddies
Tuesday:  Speech & Language, Music
Wednesday:  Let's Find Out! magazine, Yoga, Council, P.E.
Thursday:  Second Step, Library
Friday:  Morning Assembly (remember to arrive in time for the assembly and help your child demonstrate respectful listening), Homework Review, Sharing, Science Hike (moved from last week due to rain), P.E.

Best wishes,
Mrs. W.
