"Truly wonderful the mind of a child is."  -Yoda, Star Wars

Hello Room K!  It is amazing how quickly October flew by and here we are starting November.  As you all grow more comfortable with the procedures in Room K, learning the website and classroom routines, I encourage you to keep up with all activities through the class calendar and website.  I strive to teach self-reliance and independence for the families and children in Room K.  That being said, I want to avoid sending many mass emails and reminders, so it is up to you to remember to check weekly for sharing themes and days, book chart due dates, reminders and to stay in touch.

We have many exciting activities in November, including our very first field trip.  We should have our Super TKs t-shirts in time for this trip.  We have two holidays this month so please pay close attention to early dismissal times and days off.

Remember:  book charts are always due the last day of the month!

Sharing is now based on our groups, which are:

Hello Room K!
We have been busy learning in Room K and I am sure you have heard about some of our learning experiences, such as Patterns, in Math, and Mat Man in our Handwriting Without Tears program.  Our day is filled with stories and the rituals we are creating in our Classroom Family.  Every child has a job each week and the jobs are rotated on Mondays.  They take their jobs seriously and do very well.

We have posted the family pictures you have contributed and also our "friends" pictures showing the many activities we enjoy together at school.  We are working on creating a loving, learning environment based on mutual respect.  This entails following our class rules:  Be Safe, Be Respectful and Be Responsible.  Please reinforce this at home.

The children are becoming competent computer navigators mainly on the Starfall website, which has many activities for reading and math.  We are working in our Rhyming Books, Journals and Science Journals.  Feel free to look at these books in you child's "tub" if you are in the classroom to gain insight into your child's progress.

I have assessed all of the children using the Dynamic Indicator of Basic Literacy Skills (DIBELS).  That is required by the District, however I have another, more detailed assessment I will be starting next week on the ESGI website (Educational Software for Guiding Instruction).  This assessment, done on the computer or iPad, will give you a detailed report of what your child knows in alphabet and number skills.  I am also assessing printing skills.

We will have Parent/Teacher conferences in early December and I will share all of this information with you.  If you have concerns about your child's progress, please contact me for an early conference.

October is Here!

It is the first week of October and Fall is in the air.  We are beginning our weekly sharing so be sure to check the Room K calendar.  Each child will share once a month.

A huge thank you to Karen Bovee for sewing new beautiful slipcovers for our little library furniture and curtains for our shelves to conceal the blocks and books until needed.

I am so proud of all the children for remembering the Book Buddies daily and the homework weekly.  We are getting into a regular routine which is so helpful for the children.  During reading we are working on Rhyming Books, Journals, Handwriting Without Tears, play dough alphabet, Starfall on the computer, Smarty Pants School on the iPad and much more.

In math we are working on Patterns and our monthly Math Journals.

We are spending a lot of time establishing routines and getting familiar with our Conscious Discipline program.  As a part of that program, please send in a family photo that we can display on the bulletin board.  It would be helpful if your photo was neatly labeled with each family member's name so we can identify everyone.

On November 17th we will be visiting Alice's Place at 1 Gun Ranch in Malibu.  It is a bio-dynamic organic farm.  Paperwork will be coing home on Monday and we will need drivers.

It has been great to have the volunteers starting in the classroom.  I can't wait till we are in full-swing.

I am really looking forward to a lovely evening Monday night at Natasha's home for our Room K dinner (thanks Natasha!).  I will see you all then.
