It is hard for me to believe how quickly the months are flying by!  We have a busy three weeks before our three week Winter Break.  Please check the class calendar as well as the school calendar on the TECS website.

This Friday is our field trip to the West Valley Food Pantry.  Please bring in your Alphabet Bag of food to donate on Friday morning by 7:45!  Unfortunately I cannot store the bags in the classroom as we have mice and that will serve as an invitation to our classroom.  We will take them to assembly.  The children will line up in the alphabetical order of the bags (I will need your help for this) as we are standing up at the assembly to tell about our "We Give Back Project."  Some of the children who want to, will speak at the assembly so be sure to attend.

We will be back at school at recess that day.  Hanukkah begins tomorrow night and I would like to celebrate Hanukkah in our classroom next Monday with the following activities:

Playing dreidel, making latkes,  Hanukkah traditions sharing by those who would like to.  If you would like to help me with this, please send me an email tomorrow or talk to me before class.  We can have our Hanukkah either from 9-10 or 1-2.

Please plan on attending one or both of the Holiday Programs on Friday, December 17th (8:30 & 10:30).  This is also the week of Parent Conferences (let me know if you have not received the Google Document).

We will be celebrating Christmas traditions on Thursday, December 16th from 12:30-1:30.  Heather will be planning the party along with Anne.  Please volunteer to help with this fun cookie decorating and story telling time.

There will be volunteer opportunities for "We Give Back" and for our traditional Topanga Gallery art show, which will be in the Spring.  Please consider helping with this wonderful even
A big thank you to Lori, Vince and Katy for doing such a great job with our Art Trek lesson today, and a huge thank you to my wonderful classroom volunteers who make small group learning a reality in Room K.  I am Thankful for all of you.

Sincerely,
Mrs. Weisberg

Week two is upon us and this is a busy month!  We will be continuing our phonics and have now learned the sight words:  a, for,is, my, me, not, on, and the.  Try looking for these words when you are reading with your child.  Have him/her "hunt" for sight words or ask them to look at a page prior to reading it and see if they can discover any words they know. All of this helps children connect to words.  I hope you enjoyed the wonderful site I sent you:  Reading Rockets.  There is a wealth of information on this site.

Our social studies topic is Thanksgiving and our special family celebrations.  I have added a link in the Social Studies section of this website to allow the children to play the videos at home that we are watching in class.

Our math topic is counting, number recognition, writing and one-to-one correspondence.  Please review the math pages with your child each night.

Remember:
The first bell rings at 7:55!  Please arrive at school at 7:45 so you avoid traffic and your child can begin the day on time.  Some lose their opportunity to be class helper because they are late, all children who are late miss the important opening activities.

Remember to send monthly book charts in so your child receives credit for reading at home.

Please return the Food Pantry Field Trip Slips before this Friday so we can plan our carpools.

This Thursday is Veteran's Day-a school holiday.

Finally,  our class Family Turkey Project is due this Friday, the 12th.  We will display all turkeys in the window and all turkeys will receive an award.  Enjoy this fun family project!
I am thankful and full of gratitude for all of your help in and out of the classroom, your support and your devotion to your children!

November Is Here!

We are beginning our month with many activities-starting with tomorrow's exciting field trip to the Noah's Ark exhibit at the Skirball Museum.  This guided field trip leads the children on a focused team-building lesson divided into different activities.  November is the perfect month for us to be thankful for our classmates with whom we spend 6 hours a day!  This Wednesday we will be fortunate to see the 4th grade perform an opera that they have been working on with members of the LA Opera.

Next Thursday we will honor the Veterans and will have the day off from school.  We will also have the entire week of Thanksgiving off due to LAUSD furlough days and the holiday.

Have you seen this?

AMC Theatres and the
Autism Society have teamed
up to bring families affected
by autism and other disabilities
and sensory issues a special
opportunity to enjoy their favorite
films in a safe and accepting
environment on a monthly basis.
Sensory Friendly Films®
will begin with a showing of
“Megamind” on November 6.
Autism is a complex
neurodevelopmental disability
that affects a person’s ability
to communicate and interact
with others. It often comes with
sensory challenges, such as
hypersensitivity to light or sound,
and children or adults affected
by autism may not understand
the social boundaries of movie
theatre etiquette, such as not
talking during the film or sitting
still through most of the show.
In order to provide a more
accepting and comfortable setting
for children with autism or other
special needs, AMC movie
auditoriums will have their lights
brought up and the sound turned
down, families will be able to bring
in their own gluten-free, caseinfree
snacks, and no previews or
advertisements will be shown
before the movie. Additionally,
audience members are welcome
to get up and dance, walk, shout
or sing - in other words, AMC’s
“Silence is Golden®” policy will
not be enforced unless the safety
of the audience is questioned.
Tickets are $6 and can be
purchased on the day of the event.
Autism Society and AMC Host
Two Sensory Friendly Films
“Megamind” will
play Saturday, November 6 at
10 am at AMC Promenade 16
Theatres at Westfield Promenade,
6100 Topanga Canyon Blvd.,
Woodland Hills. “Harry Potter
and the Deathly Hallows: Part
1” will show on Saturday,
November 20 at 10 a.m.

This seems like a great idea for all young children and might make a nice outing for Room K students and their families.  Many children are sensitive to loud noises and dark theaters.

The year is flying by!  Please be sure you are checking this blog/newsletter and the class calendar for upcoming events.  A big thank you to Mario for copying our Alphabet Scrapbook pages and putting them in the children's notebooks, to Amy and Cheryl for helping so much with our field trips and classroom organization, for all of the wonderful classroom helpers that enable us to work with small groups of children daily and for all the parents helping us with our field trip supervision.  I am thankful for all of my Room K families!
