Dr. Seuss Week!

3/2/2019

Remember to read to your children 20 minutes per day and turn in your monthly reading log (on this site).

Speech & Language:  This week we will practice the blend /sn/.  We will make snakes.  Please send in one toilet paper roll (without the paper) if you have not done so already.  We will use these to make the snakes.  Our snack of snap peas will come straight from our class garden!  The children planted these with Sarah awhile ago and they are ready to pick and eat.  That will be a fun treat for the children!

Sharing:  The Tiggers will share this week.  If your Piglet did not share on Friday, please have them bring their share this Friday.  It is important for all children to have the opportunity to practice public speaking.

This week we will meet Ms. U.  With her umbrella, she is prepared for our week ahead.  The children are getting so excited as we near the end of the alphabet!  We will continue our rhyming book, Alphabet Dictionary, writing journal, reading games, listening center, Benchmark reading materials and Handwriting Without Tears.  The children are making progress using Lexia and Starfall.

In math we will begin our March math journal.  Additionally we are working on sorting and explaining our math.  The ability to articulate explanations for math problems/solutions in addition to solving the problem is a foundational part of Common Core math.  We will continue to use manipulatives and play math games such as addition Bingo.  We are also practicing writing our numbers up to 30 (TK) and to 100 (for K and all who are interested).

March 2nd is the birthday of Dr. Seuss (Theodor Geisel) and we celebrate Read Across America.
We will continue reading Dr. Seuss books and learn many sight words contained in the books.  Did you know the reason he wrote The Cat in the Hat was because he was challenged to write a book using sight words?  He wanted to write a book that would teach children to read and thought that the Dick and Jane books of the day were boring for children.  His books are fun for children because they have rhyming words, easy words to sound out and great, fun illustrations that capture the imagination of children of all ages. We would love to have guest readers come in to read during this special week of celebration.  I have many Dr. Seuss books or you are welcome to come in to read a favorite book of your child's from home.  Please sign up on the separate sign up sent via email.
We will be having fun activities this week to celebrate in class!

Our schedule this week:
Monday:  Big Buddies
Tuesday:  Speech & Language, Music
Wednesday: Let's Find Out! magazine, yoga, Council, P.E.
Thursday:  Second Step, Library
Friday:  Morning Assembly, Homework Review, Sharing, Science, P.E.

Thank you for all of your support and help in the classroom and preparing materials at home,
Mrs. W.
