Endings and Beginnings

We are in the middle of May and quickly approaching the end of the school year.  We have six weeks of school left to complete our Transitional Kindergarten curriculum and are preparing for next year.  You may have noticed an increase in writing as we learn to "copy" from the white board as the children will be expected to do next year.  We are learning to "read" directions and sound out words we don't already have in our sight word vocabulary.  The children are encouraged to be independent, responsible students, caring for their school supplies and classroom materials.  You can help your child by maintaining your own organization at home and encouraging your child with chores and responsibilities.

We are preparing for this Friday's field trip to the Getty Villa by learning about the Greek Gods and Goddesses, reading Aesop's Fables and discussing story morals, fiction and non-fiction.  At the Getty we will be focusing on architecture and that will carry over into our block building; loved by all!

The final sharing assignment is posted here under the title of Monthly Sharing.  Please help your child prepare for this.  So far, no one has done the assignment so I am moving Eeyores to June 3rd and Winnie-the-Poohs to June 10th.  Please read the calendar and make sure you plan ahead.  The children are very confused and disappointed when they are unprepared for class.  The last week of homework will be the week of June 6-10th.  The last two weeks we will be focusing on special end of the year activities and our sea life studies.

I read the book A Bad Case of Tattle Tongue by Julia Cook to the class last week.  It has a great lesson and I am going to post the rules in class.  They are:
#1  Be a Danger Ranger-If a person or animal is in danger, you must warn someone!
#2 Be a Problem Solver-If the problem involves you, take charge and try hard to solve it yourself first.
#3 Now or Later-Is the problem a "NOW" problem or a "NOT NOW" problem?  Can your problem be solved at a later time?
#4 M.Y.O.B. (Mind Your Own Beeswax!)-If the problem is not dangerous and it does not involve you...DO NOT TATTLE!

These are good rules for home too!

I will be assessing the children  in June in time for the final Report Card.  Remember, I make every attempt to communicate through this Blog and send reminders via e-mail.  Please make every attempt to communicate with me about any concerns.   Thank you!
