We will be working in our January Math Journals, exploring new concepts and focusing on talking about math and explaining how we solve math problems. The ability to articulate about problem solving is one of the new Common Core areas being emphasized. We practice with our classmates using the "think-pair-share" method of talking with a partner, and we also practice with adults. When your child is doing homework at home, be sure to ask how an answer was found. The best way to help children learn to express themselves is to give them time to answer. We call this "wait time." It takes a lot of patience, but allowing children to come up with an explanation instills pride and when they are older, they will be able to transfer this to writing about their math problems.
We will continue our enrichment classes, science, Art Trek, Library, P.E., Speech and Language and yoga.
We will also having more Free Choice time, when the children can self-select activities and develop social skills, communication skills and have lots of fun too!

This month's Sharing Assignment, Toys on Parade, can be found on this site, under the "more" tab (Monthly Sharing Assignments). Check the calendar for your child's day to share.

Our share in February is a special fabric share. You can preview the instructions on the Website Sharing Assignments, but most importantly, we need 1-2 parents to take charge of this project. The fabric squares each child contributes will be made into a lovely quilt to be auctioned off at the school Silent Auction. The parents in charge will need to decide on a color scheme, and/or pattern. I am more than happy to help and have a lot of experience in this area. It is very fun and the kids love it! Please see me this week so we can prepare!
I look forward to seeing all of you Monday morning!
