This week we will meet Ms. W and her wonderful words.  You may have notice your child sounding out words, "reading" and suddenly very interested in trying to figure out words by themselves.  We have been learning sight words and focusing on letter sounds, rhyming words and other pre-reading skills that have helped the children build the confidence they need to take a chance figuring out the words around them.  Every morning we start out with a question of the day.  The children come in (often before school starts) and sound out the words in order to answer the question.  They enjoy helping each other and some children just can't resist shouting out the question!  Stimulating the desire to read via organic methods like a child's natural curiosity, reading stories and books aloud, listening to books with recorded accompaniment, and listening to stories on Starfall.com leads to a strong desire to read "by myself" for many children.

We enjoyed having all of our guest readers bring in special books to share and the children were very happy and proud to show off their dads and moms!  Thank you all for helping to make the week of Dr. Seuss' birthday so special.

Did you know that there are monthly book charts on this site?  Please print out a chart for your child each month and bring it in-filled, at the end of the month.

We have started P.E. on the lower playground and thanks to Coach Harold, last week enjoyed learning the volleyball game of prisoner ball.  Please remember to wear tennis shoes, everyday, but especially on P.E. days.  If you are ever interested in watching or helping during P.E., it occurs every Wednesday from 9:30-10:00.

Thanks to those of you who came in to talk during Parent Conferences.  I appreciated the opportunity to share information about your child and enjoyed hearing what you had to say too!  Working in partnership promotes the most positive outcome for a child's learning and success in school.

Next Monday is St. Patrick's Day and our party mom's Farracy and Heather are planning a little something special for the end of the afternoon.  The Topanga Elementary Charter School Student Council has asked the students to wear Green &/or Gold that day.  This is optional and the Council has asked us to remind the children that there is NO PINCHING for those who do not wear green!

Have a great week and thank you all for all that you do to help us in Room K!
Mrs. W.
