This week, we will begin our Speech & Language class with Mrs. Youmna Schlieske, our Speech Therapist. Youmna and I have been collaborating for the past 4 years. Last year we presented our program at the Southern California Kindergarten Conference, and just this month we presented 2 workshops at the Palisades Charter Complex Professional Development Day. Our program consists of introducing a speech sound (phoneme), practicing the modeled sound, making a craft or playing a game that reinforces the sound, thinking of words that begin with the sound and sharing them with the group, and eating a snack that begins with the sound.
The first week, Mrs. Youmna will bring the snack and we will have a sign-up sheet for all parents to sign up to bring the snack 2 times the first semester. The children love when it is their turn to bring the snack!
We will have a little homework assignment this week and our regular homework will begin the following week. Your child will be receiving materials to use for the school year, that go with the homework program. These will be returned before school gets out.
Monday I am also sending home an access code and a parent letter for Raz-Kids, a computer (can also be accessed on the iPad) program to help children learn to read.
Thank you all for picking up the Room K routine so quickly! I especially love the great separate snack containers many of you have been packing. It has really helped the children grab their snacks quickly before recess. It's a small thing, but it lowers the stress level for the children.
Reminders:
*wear safe (tennis, or other rubber-soled) shoes & socks to school each day
*remember your Book Buddy and folder everyday and put it in the blue crate
each morning
Coming up:
-Volunteer training this Friday. PLEASE ATTEND! Volunteers can start next week and I depend on your help.
-Kristy (Brodie's mom) will be facilitating the class volunteer sign ups
-Malena (Joseph's mom) will be our class treasurer and a letter from here will be in your child's folder Monday.
-Lisa (Kai's mom) will be our class Room Parent (but help is welcome!). She will be reaching out for class help and to plan our class Dinner.
-Enrichment will be starting NEXT week. We will have P.E. Wednesdays & Fridays so please have your children wear safe play clothes inorder to participate fully. We will have Science on Mondays and visit the school library on Fridays.
-Friday mornings we have an all kindergarten sing-along in Mr. Harrell's classroom from 8:35-9:00. It is really fun for the children to sing together and many times we have parents bring their guitars and join in. In the Spring we will perform these songs on the Garden Stage.
If you have any questions, please send me an email or include a note in your child's folder and remember to sign up for blog updates with your email address.
Best wishes,
Mrs. Weisberg
