S.T.E.M. Activities Begin!

Speech & Language:  This week we will practice the blend of /ch/.  The craft will be a giant chocolate chip cookie and our snack will be Chocolate Chip Cookies contributed by Stella.

Sharing:  The Eeyores will share this Friday.
What is S.T.E.M.?  S.T.E.M. is an integrated program meaning science, technology, engineering and math.  We are going to begin S.T.E.M. activities this week, our first being an activity about building a raft to keep 4 people afloat.  The kit we will use comes with all of the raft building materials.  The children will work in teams to design a raft, then build the raft with the provided materials, and test our their raft in our water table to see if they can keep the 4 weighted people afloat for 20 seconds.  I am really excited to conduct these experiments and facilitate the children working together to problem solve and learn to find solutions.  I know they will love these activities!

This week we will meet Letter Person Ms. U and her unusual umbrella!   This is another opportunity to reinforce vowel sounds both short and long.  We will reinforce the sound using our Alphabet Dictionary and listening center as well as Starfall on the computers.  We will also be working in our Handwriting Without Tears printing books, using ABC Mouse and playing reading games to have fun learning to read CVC words.

We will finish up our March math journal and begin the April journal.  The children are really advancing in number concepts and geometry and enjoy practicing construction with blocks and playing math games such as cards (adding numbers) and dominos (greater than/equal/less than).  Puzzles continue to be a big attraction, especially our large floor puzzles which allow the children to work together in teams to complete the puzzle.

Our schedule this week is:
Tuesday:  Speech & Language, Art
Wednesday:  P.E., Planet Bravo, Let's Find Out! magazine, 2nd Step
Thursday:  S.T.E.M. Raft experiment
Friday:  Morning Assembly, Music with Sean, Homework Review, Sharing, Library, Big Buddies

Many thanks to all of you who help Room K be the wonderful place it is!
Mrs. W.

Welcome back Amy! I wanted to let you know that I plan on attending the field trip next week, but I have bronchitis right now so I won't be around probably until next week to be safe. Have a great first week back!
