We had a great 1st week in Room K and spent a lot of time getting to know each other. We are learning rules and procedures with Pip the Pup, whom you might have heard about. There are many Pip the Pup stories that teach the procedures and when the children learn and follow the procedures, they earn a small award showing that they are "certified." We are encouraging the children to listen and follow the 3 B's too.
We are very fortunate to have our aide Ms. Nena helping us in class and we are both looking forward to next week when parent volunteers can begin working in the classroom. Dana, Scout's mom, has set up our class Shutterfly page. You will find information here about class and school events and best of all, photos of the children. You can print these directly from the site (there is an app that is really easy to navigate).
Please be aware that in order to volunteer you MUST have TB test on file in the school office and attend a volunteer training. The first training will be this Thursday, August 29th at 9:00 a.m.
The daily volunteer opportunities are:
8:00-9:00-helping with unpacking Book Buddies, preparing reading centers (1 per day)
9:00-10:00-assisting the children during reading rotations (1 per day)
10:30-11:20-playing math games with the children (1 per day)

This week we will begin informal reading groups based on my assessment of the children last week. These groups are flexible depending on student progress and can change throughout the year.
We will be making color books each week for 8 weeks or so. The children will make the book and then on Thursdays we will wear the color. This week is "red" week. I will send home instructions in Book Buddies on Monday. We will begin using our computers this week, focusing on a program called Starfall. We will add our school-wide program, Lexia, in a few weeks.
Our schedule for the week will be:
Monday: Dance (teacher from the LAUSD Arts Prototype Program)
Tuesday: Learning Centers (free choice)
Wednesday: Yoga, Council
Thursday: Library
Friday: No School: California Admissions Day
Upcoming:
Enrichment begins next week including, computers, P.E., and Science
Back to School Night is September 3rd from 6-7:30 p.m. (adults only!)
Commitment Dinner: TBD (adults only)
Thank you for a great 1st week!
