Writing Our Own Stories

Remember next week is a 3-day weekend honoring Caesar Chavez Day on April 1st!

Speech & Language:  This week we will be practicing the sound of /sh/.  The initial blends can be tricky for young children as they often resemble other closely related sounds.  Ms. Youmna is so wonderful in her ability to help the children articulate the sounds correctly and enunciate!  We will practice lacing "shoes" an our snack of Shortbread will be contributed by Lucia!

Sharing:  All of the groups have had an opportunity to share "small things" however if your child did not have the opportunity to share, please have him/her bring their share in this Friday.

This week we will meet Mr. X, who is different.  His song is about how we are all unique in our own ways and how we can appreciate each other's unique qualities.  We will practice our diagonal lines while making our letter X and we will listen to the sound of /x/ which is generally found at the end of the words, reinforcing rhyming words. We will be completing our Alphabet Dictionary this week and are almost finished with our Handwriting Without Tears printing practice book.  We will still be working in our Rhyming Books, our journals and our Benchmark unit workbooks.  Additionally, we are now beginning to write our own stories!  I have purchased small hardbound books for each student and we will be working together to create our own, illustrated fairy tales and/or folk tales.  This will be a step-by-step process as we study the elements of a story, character development, setting and plot.  Our Big Buddies will help us by reading fairy tales and folk tales to us.  We have been reading them in class too!

Hopefully your children have told you about our STEP (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) activities.  We have worked in small learning groups to:
  • Build a chair strong enough to hold Goldilocks and the Three Bears
  • Build a bridge strong enough to support the Three Billy Goats Gruff and high enough to allow the troll to stand underneath
  • Build a house for the Three Little Pigs that the Wolf can't blow down
  • Construct a working parachute that allowed at least 1 weighted "person" to land safely
This week we will continue by building a raft and a roof that won't leak in the "rain."  These STEM projects allow the students to collaborate to solve problems and they enjoy building and working together!

We had a great time on our science hike this week and it aligned perfectly with our STEM projects as we used found sticks, bits of clay and grass to construct bridges across a gully that allowed small dinosaurs to cross safely.  Please check out our photos on our class Shutterfly site!  I try to post as many pictures as possible so that you all are able to see the great things we are doing in Room K.  This week Ms. Benor will be teaching the children about insects and what they need to survive.

In the past we have had a parent create a class photo album that parents could order from Shutterfly and of course you are welcome to make your own or order the pictures via Shutterfly.  If anyone is interested in creating an album for the class, the children love looking through it, even years later.

A huge thank you to Sarah for working with the children in our class garden raised-bed. She has made sure our children have a wonderful outdoor garden experience and our plants are doing so well, especially with the great rain we've been having the past couple of months.  I also want to thank Sarah for attending the Art Trek trainings so we are able to have meaningful art lessons.

I would like to thank our wonderful classroom volunteers:  Yuco, Simone H., Stacey, Ana, Sarah, Dina, and Whitney for helping to facilitate small groups, keep our class running smoothly and set up our mini-computer lab for technology learning.  Thanks to Lidia, Bahareh and Sonia for preparing work at home, to Lisa for helping out teaching Art Trek, to Sinead for teaching the children Irish dancing, and to Laura for disseminating information to our class.  I feel so fortunate to have such wonderful classroom parents who are enthusiastic about helping our class have so many great experiences.

Our Schedule:
Monday:  Big Buddies
Tuesday:  Speech & Language, Music (our last class as Ms. Porter will be working with the upper grades now)
Wednesday:  Let's Find Out! magazine, Yoga, Council, P.E.
Thursday:  Gardening, Art Trek, Library
Friday:  Morning Assembly, Sharing (make ups), Science, P.E.

Best wishes,
Mrs. W.
